What is USB? USB stands for Universal Serial Bus and is a peripheral communication standard developed by the computer industry. USB provides a powerful interface between a computer and add-on peripheral devices. These devices can be digital cameras, modems, CD-ROMs, keyboards, mice, joysticks, telephones, scanners, security devices, microphones, speakers, removable drives, printers, etc.

Advantages of the USB are as follows:

* No internal card installation
* No interrupt or address conflicts
* No rebooting of your system after device has been installed once (reboot not always required first time)
* No having to open the computer case
* Support for two data rates: 1.5 and 12 megabits per second (Mbps)
* Loads and unloads of drivers as needed
* "Hot plug capable" - the device can be plugged in, used, and unplugged without having to reboot the system
* Has two standardized plugs for the a large range of devices
* Power for some devices is supplied through the USB cable
* A network topology that allows for the connection of up to 127 devices per computer host
