| FDDI | (Fiber Distributed Data Interface) A standard that defines a high-speed (100 Mbps) local area network using fiber optic cable as the medium. Fiber provides two rings a primary and a second ring, where the secondary ring is the backup. |
| FTP | (File Transfer Protocol) A method that defines the way in which files are exchanged. Used by many networks and internet. |
| Fiber-Optic Cable | Glass fiber cable used to carry large amounts of data transmitted by light pauses. |
| File Server | A computer on a network that stores and serves files to other computers on the network. |
| Firewall | Barrier set up to contain local network from Internet traffic. Firewalls function as security between a local network and the internet. |
| Flame | An angry on-line attack usually by e-mail. |
| Frame Relay | A way of packet switching that uses smaller packets thatrequire less error checking than other methods. |
| Full Duplex | Used in communications systems to simultaneously transmmit data in two directions. |
| Full-Motion Video | The display in of pictures by a multimedia system at rates approaching 30 frames/second . |
| GIF | (Graphic Interchange Format) A format for storing graphic image files. One of the popular formats for images on the internet. |
| GUI | (Graphical User Interface) The means of interacting a computer with a user. GUI uses icons, menus, and other means to create a simple way of performing tasks on a computer |
| Gateway | A device that transfers information between networks. |
| Giga- | Prefix meaning one billion. |
| Gigabyte | Gigabyte (GB): 1,073,741,800 bytes. |
| Graphics Adapter | An electronic card used as a bridge between a computer and an monitor. |
| HTML | (HyperText Markup Language) A simple programming language with which most internet documents are written. |
| HTTP | (HyperText Transfer Protocol) A method used to get and transfer HTML documents on the internet. |

| IDE | (Integrated Drive Electronics) A Standard for connecting hard disks or other drives with an embedded controller to the AT bus. |
| Image Map | An image in HTML that contains places that when clicked on by a user will send them to another document. |
| Intel | A U.S. manufacturer of microelectronic components. |
| JPEG | (Joint Photographic Experts Group) A Standard format for images that allows large images to be greatly compressed. This format is mainly seen on the internet. |
