Terms Definitions

PCMCIA (Personal Computer Memory Card International Association) The Interface for credit-card-sized adapters that are inserted into a PCMCIA slot usually seen in notebook computers.
PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) A term used for a portable computing device that is usually capable of transmitting data like e-mail or faxes.
PING (Packet Internet Gropher) Software used to test network connections.
POP (Post Office Protocol) A method that allows clients to pick up their mail from the server.
POST To send a message to a newsgroup.
Packet A small group of bytes that contain the data that is sent through a network.
Parity A method of detecting errors in data recording or transmission.
Pixel A point on a computer monitor. The smallest unit of the computer display screen. Used in determining the monitor’s resolution
Proxy Server This computer acts as a stand-in or proxy for the remote server.

Quicktime A Digital audio and video standard developed by Apple Computer.

RAID (Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks) A Data storage system in which multiple hard drives are used to create a redundant data storage system
RAM (Random Access Memory ) The temporary storage that is used to run application programs. The information in RAM is deleted when the computer is turned off.
RISC (Reduced Instruction Set Computer) Microprocessors that have a significantly reduced instruction set.
ROM (Read Only Memory) Memory which data that has been written in advance can be read but cannot be written.
RS-232 Serial wiring standard for connecting data terminal equipment to data communications equipment.
Real-Time Computer processing that appears to take place imediately.
Resolution Measure of the clearity in an image.
Router A Device that connects two or more networks at the network layer.

SCSI (Small Computer System Interface) A high-level interface for devices such as hard drives, CD-ROM and scanners among others.
SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol ) A method used to transfer electronic mail between computers.
Spam Act of bombing you with mail.

T-1 A private line connection capable of carrying data at 1.544 Mbps.
T-3 A private line connection capable of carrying data 44.736 Mbps.
Tag The central element in a markup language like HTML
Tbyte (Terabyte) One trillion bytes
Thread A series of messages about a given topic.
Twisted Pair Cable A pair of twisted copper wires used in networking.
