Terms Definitions

UNIX
A multitasking operating system for serving multiple workstations.
UPS
(Uninterruptable Power Supply) Usually refer to as a backup source of power for a computer system or network.
URL
(Uniform Resource Locator) The address for a document on the internet.

VGA
(Video Graphics Array) An video card that provides for higher resolution then the previous CGA, EGA cards
VRML
(Virtual Reality Modeling Language) A specification for displaying 3-D information on web pages
Voice Recognition
The ability of a computer to recognize spoken language

WAN
(Wide Area Network) Data network that is not restricted by distance. A companies WAN can span over cities, states or countries.

XENIX
A version of UNIX for the PC.
XMODEM
A Microprocessor modem file transfer protocol.

Y2K
A acronym for the year 2000
YMODEM
A file transfer protocol used between modems

Z shell
A Unix command interpreter shell
ZMODEM
A file transfer protocol with error checking and crash recovery
Zip Drive
A drive made by Iomega Corp. which takes removable 100 megabyte cartridges.
